WU: Subversion

Watch the video provided here, and in a blog post, comment on how the video demonstrates subversion/subversiveness. After you make your own post, comment on ONE of your peers, entering into a conversation with her. By doing this, you will EXTEND what your classmate has said in her post.

HINT: Think about what you learned in the very first unit about culture -- more specifically high/dominant culture versus low culture. Also, read the information in the video and listen to the explanation of the dancer's background. Where does the dance form he mentions originate? What other dance forms does he seem to combine with it? Pay attention to the space he is using and what he is doing in that space. All of these considerations should assist you in considering how this video demonstrates subversion and subversiveness. Be sure to use the form of the word correctly.

Forms of the word:

subvert - verb
subversion - noun
subversive - adjective/adverb
subversiveness - noun

In other words, it's not enough so simply say you agree or disagree or that what the other student has said is "good". Instead, while you may certainly pay compliments or disagree, you must ADD information to what they are saying, EXTENDING, COMPLICATING, OR REFUTING what another student has said.

Here is the video:

  2. This is an example of subversion because this man is taking the dance style hip hop and ballet and almost making them one. He is flipping the norm because these two styles are not usually put together, as one style is more high class while the other is more low class.

    1. I like what you said about high class because the video is sponsored by Louis Vuitton which is a high class brand. It is ironic that this brand is sponsoring this video because like how you said, hip hop is more low class which subverts the ballet aspect of the video/dance.

  3. This video is illustrating the key term, subversion. Subversion is undermining the power and authority of an established system or institution here. The traditional view or system is usually either doing ballet or hip pop. In the video, the man talks about how he found a way to learn both. His style of dancing is combining hip pop and ballet, which is subverting the traditional view of one or the other.

  4. The video is an example of subversion because his art form of dance developed from rap music in Memphis, which could be stereotyped as low society, but it also connected with ballet, which is stereotype as high society. He also performs his dance in an art museum, another demonstration of "high" society and "low" society collaborating and becoming one. The connection between the two seemingly juxtaposed art forms is subversion.

    1. That was a good point about hip hop in an art museum also being an example of subversion. An art museum is usually a place where people stand around and whisper, so the fact that the dancer was dancing, and dancing hip hop, completely subverts the usual behavior and expectations of an art museum.

  5. The video lends itself to the idea of subversion because the dancer was raised into a negatively connotated environment, but goes against the odds and defies himself with ballet. Furthermore, he mentions his dance form comes from hip hop, which he flips upside down and turns it into a positively connotated form. He uses subversion to associate opposite things with each other and is going against dominant society.

    1. I agree with what you wrote but I think you could add more about why it as seen as "defying the odds" when he learns to dance ballet. You could talk about the connotations and social ties that ballet has to certain types of people and classes.

  6. The video demonstrates subversion through the two opposite styles of dance. Hip Hop and rap are often considered low culture. Ballet and fine art museums are considered high culture. The dancer subverts the reputation of hip hop as low culture and makes it seem more classy. The dancer grew up in Chicago and Tennessee, both places that are not considered high class or high on the social hierarchy. By combining ballet and the fine arts with hip hop and rap, the stereotypical reputation of hip hop is subverted.

    1. Although I agree with everything you said, I think that the reputation of ballet might also be subverted, a little bit, when he combines it with hip hop.

  7. The video was an example of subversion because the protagonist comes from a hip hop background, something that is generally associated with low culture, but dances ballet something that is associated with sophistication. The protagonist also is a male who dances, while dancing is very female dominated occupation.

  8. The dancer in this video implies that the style of dance that he specializes in has been considered low culture, as it originated in Memphis’ lower-class areas. Ballet, on the other hand, a dance that the dancer also knows, is considered higher culture. He combines the two dances and dances through an art gallery, mimicking some of the paintings as he goes. By dancing in an art gallery, which is usually thought of as a part of high culture, and by using some elements of ballet in the dance, he subverts the idea of his style as low culture.

  9. The dancer subverts the typical idea of ballet and combines it with something which is not usually thought of as similar to ballet. Hip hop is usually thought of as street dancing style and one wouldn't think of it as formal or hold it up to the same standard as one does with ballet. Combining the two, allows the dancer to demonstrate that hip hop can be held at the same standard, as ballet which subverts the social ideas that hip hop can be just as hip hop and requires just as much skill and is as classy as ballet.

  10. This is an example of subversion. It shows how the idea of hip hop dancing has been subverted from . He begins by saying how the hip hop he did was “underground” dance and he used to trade his expertise for that of ballet instructors. What came from this deal was a blend between two typically dichotomous styles of dance. Hip hop dancing is not usually considered very fancy or high class, but once ballet technique was added to it, it became less “underground” and more refined. This video was created by a very well known brand that costs large amounts of money and he is dancing in a place filled with fine art. This shows he subversion of the idea of hip hop because it puts hip hop next to things that exemplify fine art and a wealthy lifestyle. Hip hope however, does not usually have this connotation.

  11. This is an example of subversion because the dancer was born in Chicago and raised in Memphis. He grew up learning hip hop and he adapted that into his culture. This wasn't the dominant culture at the time though and it was subverted by other genres at the time. The dancer was able to learn other genres of dance and still incorporate it with his hip hop, forming his own style and culture of dance.

  12. This is an example of subversion because the dancer, who was originally a hip hop dancer, is taking a form of hip hop and subverting it to ballet. He is combining the two dances together to create a new idea; he is changing/shifting one idea to another. It is also set in an art museum, and is sponsored by The Icons of Modern Art, which shows a subversion from visual arts to performing arts, and combining the two together.

  13. The dancer explains that he originally took part in was a form of dance that he says originates from an underground rap music from Memphis. He later combined this dance with ballet, which is a very traditional dance that usually goes with classical music of some sort, rather than rap music. Hip hop dance to rap and ballet to classical music are on two completely different sides of the spectrum in terms of their value in (high) society so to combine them into one dance form is subverting the norms of dance culture.

  14. The video demonstrates subversion because the dancer is subverting hip hop to ballet. He does this by combining two dances together to create a new dance.

    1. This alone is not subversion. Your statement has to challenge or be different from a specific power or generalization about society. You could say something like: because he combines two dances he is different from typical dancers. Imean you don’ have to say that but it would help if you elaborated on the effects his dance style has. Or the meaning behind the message of the video.

  15. The man in this video is a dancer. His style of dance consists of a combination of ballet and hip hop, but was originally only hip-hop. Louis Vuitton, a rich designer sponsored this video of a hip hop dancer. This is an example of subversion because the rich designer culture is very different from that of hip-hop, yet they are working together to promote art.

  16. This video is an example of subversion because socially we have come to think of ballet as a very feminine dance and ballet dancers are usually Caucasian females. It originated from France and is usually enjoyed by people of very high class. He is a black male, comes from Chicago and probably didn't have much money, since he taught the other ballet dancers hip hop in exchange for them giving him ballet lessons.

  17. This video subverts the dance ballet through the the dancer wearing basketball shoes and being a black male. Ballet is usually a delicate dance that is associated with white, delicate girls performing it, but in the video a black male is performing ballet, and not in pointe shoes but basketball shoes. This undermines the idea of ballet only being reserved for certain people.

    1. I agree, but you could also add that a black male coming from a hip hop background dancing ballet in basketball shoes could add to the subversion because hip hop is not a delicate dance nor is it generally danced by white women.

  18. In the video, the dancers explains how he came from a hip hop background because of his surrounding black culture. When he gets in to the dance world, he subverts to ballet because ballet is the type of dance that the dominate culture practices. The hip hop people would teach the ballet people and vice versa. This also happens with Fredrick Douglas as he trades with the little white boys to learn how to read and write. The setting of the video is in a predominantly white museum which could represent the dominate white culture. The black man is dressed in all black which makes him really pop out against the white background. Him standing out could represent him being different since he came from a hip hop background and then subverting to a white cultured type of dance.

  19. This video demonstrates subversion because it shows an alternate meaning of dance, specifically hip hop and ballet. Ballet is traditionally thought as something with
Ponte shoes and tutus and is graceful and elegant. Hip hop is usually thought of as "lower class" and is usually preformed to rap music. The dancer in the video dances gracefully to classical music while incorporating traditional hip hop moves. He is dancing a form of ballet while wearing tennis shoes. He combines the styles of dance and shows that hip hop can be graceful and ballet can incorporate hip hop moves. Therefore, both hip hop and ballet are subverted.

  20. The video subverts the traditional image of hip hop. Society sees hip hop as a part of the low culture. Stereotypically, African Americans are placed into this category also. Contrastingly, ballet is part of a more sophisticated culture. By showing an African American man mixing ballet and hip hop, the video subversively puts hip hop into a higher class culture. Also, because society tends to characterize African American men as being tough and part of lower class, and ballet is a delicate form of dancing, that is part of the higher class, the image of the African American man is subverted too. To emphasize this subversion of hip hop, the video is filmed in a museum which is usually put into the same context as ballet. Also, the video is sponsored by Luis Vuitton which is very expensive and also part of high class culture.

  21. The video demonstrates subversion when the dancer combines ballet dancing with hip hop dancing. In society, ballet dancing is seen as a type of dance that is high up on the scale of dancing hierarchy, whereas hip hop dancing is seen as lower on the scale. When the dancer combines both dances, he creates a form of dance that is on neither end of the scale of dance hierarchy, but more in the middle. He subverts the connotation of both dances, changing them into something they weren’t before.

  22. I’m not really sure if this is subversion because the example I’m about to use doesn’t really conflict with any superior power, but I guess it makes sense in the way that it is different from the general public. The Dancer spoke about his type of dance style and how he discovered and created it. His style is a combination of ballet and hip hop. He spoke about how, growing up in Memphis, he listened to music that inspired his unique movements. This artist is currently very popular and his accomplishments are an example of subversion because they are something that challenges the typical ways that dancers achieve their success. Many people practice one type of dance rather than combine different types, let alone two that seem so incompatible. In this way the dancer subverts and possibly surpasses those around him by incorporating and learning multiple styles of dance to then incorporate them into his own.
